Env Parser

Parse, validate, and format .env files. Detect duplicate keys and convert between .env, JSON, and YAML. All processing happens in your browser.

Parses and validates as you type.

How It Works

This tool parses .env files entirely in your browser using JavaScript. It reads each line, identifies key-value pairs, comments, and blank lines, and performs validation checks on the structure.

  • Parsing — splits input into key-value pairs, respecting quoted values (single and double quotes), inline comments, and multiline values
  • Validation — detects duplicate keys, empty values, invalid key names, and syntax issues like unclosed quotes
  • Formatting — outputs a clean, consistently formatted .env file with aligned values and preserved comments
  • JSON Export — converts environment variables to a JSON object with proper string values
  • YAML Export — converts environment variables to YAML format suitable for Docker Compose or Kubernetes configs

.env File Syntax

  • Keys — must start with a letter or underscore, followed by letters, digits, or underscores (e.g., DB_HOST)
  • Values — can be unquoted, single-quoted, or double-quoted; double-quoted values support escape sequences like \n
  • Comments — lines starting with # are comments; inline comments after unquoted values are supported
  • export prefix — lines like export KEY=value are valid and the export prefix is stripped
